Sphene Rough Times

Hello again. Here is the latest from Madagascar Gems.

Gilbert has returned from another week in the bush. Sphene and sapphire were the focus of this expedition.

He reports that an "American Investor" has filed a claim on the land where the sphene mine (that we do business with) is located. This means our next shipment will most likely be the last we can buy from this mine.

Send me an email to express an interest in some of these last sphenes from this mine.

The local Malagasy people often do not file official documentation to claim mining rights to the land when they discover a gem deposit... they just start mining.

To assure a supply of sphene to our customers, we will work with local miners to discover new deposits in the same area... and we will file the official paperwork.

While Madagascar Gems will hold the mining rights, we will not work the claim. The same local miners will be allowed to freely perform the mining and sell what they recover, just as they have always done. What we will ask in return is first choice of the rough, which we will purchase at fair prices.

This strategy will prevent a recurrence of someone forcing the miners out of their mine.

We will delay development of our own ruby mine to focus on developing a new sphene source. We will keep you informed in future Bulletins.

Gilbert also reports that the roads have suffered greatly, and are in poor condition from the torrential rains associated with the cyclone season that just ended.

He sent along this photo of debris blocking the "road" to a mining area.

These obstructions and washouts will be repaired by the locals between now and next cyclone season... well, some of them will. For some other obstructions, it's easier to just go around.
