Madagascar Ruby Mining

Hello again. Here is the latest from Madagascar Gems.

As I announced in the last Bulletin, the geographical operating base for Madagascar Gems has been relocated to the southwestern coast town of Tulear (Toliara) You can view a map of Madagascar here.

This region is more arid open, as seen in these photos.

Before I get to the point of this Bulletin I will answer a question about the name of the town. "Why does the town have two names?" As I understand the story...

Tulear was the name of the city and the surrounding region dating from the French Colonial times. In 1980 the independent country of Madagascar changed the names of several provinces, and the capital cities of those provinces.

This is how Tulear acquired the name Toliara. (I am told it means "the anchorage over there" in the Malagasy language). To complete this little insight - The official name of the town that we now operate from is Toliara... but almost everyone still calls it Tulear.

Now that you know that bit of information, we can move along to the reason for this Bulletin.

Among the mining concessions Madagascar Gems owns is a "Ruby Ground" - a 2.5 square kilometer mining concession and permit in the Vatomandry region (East coast, mid-island)

We have never had the time to develop and exploit this concession, but adjoining concessions are producing ruby and sapphire.

Because Gilbert is now operating far from this region, we are offering this Ground for lease.

The Ground is about 5 km from one of the scarce paved roads in the region. There is an access road to the Ground, which is in a meadow near a village with eager workers.

We purchased the mining rights to this Ground because of mining on surrounding plots... and the villagers showed Gilbert rubies, sapphires, and garnets taken from this specific Ground.

The stones are in a layer of sedimentation... presumably an alluvial flood plain deposit. The ruby rough Gilbert saw were all in the 0.5 to 1 gram size range.

This particular area is well known for producing ruby and sapphire. Mining in this region is decidedly low-tech and low budget. Picks, shovels, and screens are the primary tools involved. A petrol-powered pump and generator would probably add to production.

The lease payment to us will be only $10,000 per year for 3 years.
