Color change garnet gem stone rough is extremely rare, and it is being mined in Madagascar today. We mine three varieties of these rare garnets. Most people are aware of alexandrite and the red-to-green change that this gem exhibits. We mine a garnet variety with the same red-to-green change. The big difference is cost. Our garnet is much more affordable than alexandrite. We also mine a garnet that exhibits a red-to-purple change... and it is very affordable. Blue color change garnet is the
rarest of them all and we have it. This is a very rare gem! Did I
mention that? The blue color change garnet gem stone rough in the photo at the top of this page is the largest we have sold. It weighed 4.8 grams and is the largest blue found in several years that is known. Prices for these stones rise dramatically with size. We may find 2 or 3 stones per month in the 0.8 to 1 gram range. Several stones below 0.5g may be found each month, and are very affordable. The name "color change garnet" does not do justice to this unique and beautiful gem. The color change is as dramatic as top quality alexandrite - or any other color change gem... natural or synthetic. In most of our stones, the daylight color of a spinel-like blue changes to a red-purple in artificial light. Color change garnet is a very modern, 20th century gemstone. To the best of our knowledge, it was discovered in 1990. This spectacular gem is a mix of pyrope and spessartine garnet,
with a significant vanadium content. Did we say this is a very rare gem... possibly the rarest known gem in the world? Our associates' mine produces approximately one or two stones per week.
